Reflection on 2007 and Things to Come

As with all organisations in the Mining Industry, Datamine has gone through a lot of growth and change in the last calendar year.

There are new staff members to expand our offerings and services capability. In addition there have been training courses to upskill new and existing staff. Fitting in the training has been more of a juggle than usual as we aim to improve our client facing time.

Datamine Australia is in the process of taking on several more staff in the coming year. Due to the demand for people in the mining industry, Datamine Australia is making full use of the work visa process to employ experienced people to complement the training of existing staff.

Datamine Australia has implemented new infrastructure, providing staff with updated tools to improve productivity and customer satisfaction. We trust that you will start to see a steady improvement in the level of service that we are able to provide over the coming year.

There continue to be ongoing improvements to Datamine’s core products and in the past year there have been major enhancements to:

·          NPV Scheduler

·          Maxipit

·          Sirovision

·          Studio 3

Thank you to the staff of Datamine who make the growth of Datamine possible and who enable us to improve our product and service offerings which in turn supports your business.

And lastly, we greatly appreciate your continuing support and usage of Datamine software and services. We look forward to working with you in the coming year.

Mine Feasibility 2008

22 & 23 April 2008

Strategies to Attract Investors, Avoid Risks, and Meet Deadlines and Budgets

Sponsored by

Datamine is sponsoring this year’s Mine Feasibility Conference on 22 & 23 April 2008 at Citigate Hotel, Perth WA.

The conference will present case study perspectives from different mining and exploration companies around the world for implementing effective strategies to avoid risks and developing successful outcomes in the feasibility stage of mining. It will give you the opportunity to brainstorm ideas with peers and expert panelists and network with feasibility professionals.

Come and join us at our workshop co-facilitated with GijimaAST on 23 April 2008:

How to Implement Mine Planning and Scheduling Tools

The next generation planning tools for the mining industry link long, medium and short term design and scheduling on a single platform enabling the user to analyse the results in a three-dimensional view and optimise the design. This technology breaks new ground in providing mine operators with key information in producing economically optimised, viable and robust mining scenarios. The ability to have designs, drilling and geological block models in the same database, linked together to generate the life of mine through to the daily plan is seen as a critical part of a mines’ development. This is particularly relevant in today’s market of supply constraint, skills shortages and volatility.

This workshop is intended to showcase:

·          What the mine planning and scheduling technology can achieve

·          How to best capitalise on this technology and optimise your mine strategy

·          How to effectively implement mine planning and scheduling tools on site

·

The workshop will be highly interactive.

Go to www.iqpc.com/au/minefeasibility2008 for the conference and workshop program and registration details.

Product Feature – Downhole Explorer 3

Downhole Explorer is an exceptionally smart drillhole presentation and plotting program with many innovative features. The document wizard makes it possible for the first time user to build an entire project complete with section plots and log sheets in a matter of minutes.

Downhole Explorer is database independent and is designed to work with your existing data management software. Changes and additions made to the source data files or tables are automatically reflected in all plots. When a new hole is added to the database, or a hole is re-surveyed, just open the Downhole Explorer document to view the updates.

The program is capable of handling any form of downhole data from many sources and allows the user to import any number of interval logs and depth logs. Geophysical, hydrogeological, mineralogical and geomechanical data can be imported, combined and displayed with the same ease as standard geochemical and lithological logs.

Downhole Explorer’s multi-view, multi-window, multi-document interface allows you to tailor the display to your precise needs. Views are linked allowing selections made in one to be displayed in all other linked views. Selections can be made directly in table, section or logs views with the mouse pointer, or you can use the Compositor Tool to navigate and interrogate the data.

New Feature – DTM Creation in Studio 3

Some of you may have noticed that in Version 11 of Studio 3 most of the old DTM commands have disappeared from the menu and toolbar:

DTM creation has been completely revised, with improved speed, functionality and ease of use.

Here is a quick tutorial to help you get started.

Below is a small contour map with a boundary:

and here is the DTM created by the previous “Make DTM”, complete with those flat spots or “rice paddies” that we all know and love:

Assuming that the contours and boundary string are saved in the same file, and have been loaded as a single object, to recreate this DTM, we just select Make DTM and the first of three dialogues is displayed:

For a quick result, just click Next. You will then get the Make DTM – Select DTM Points and Strings dialogue:

A list of string and point objects will be displayed, and you just select the ones you wish to use either by ticking the boxes, or via the “whole object selection” icon: .

(Note that you can also select partial objects using “standard selection” i.e. just click in the Design Window.)

Click Next, and you will get the Make DTM – Select Boundary Strings dialogue:

Don’t tick the contours object; you don’t want all the strings to be used as boundaries! Just left click in the Design Window to select the boundary string, then click Finish.

The DTM is shown below:

Note the absence of rice paddies!

You can have multiple outer and inner boundaries; the system looks at the nesting of any boundaries strings and assumes that the outermost one is an outer boundary then works inwards from there. There is an option to invert this logic.

There are also options to automatically create “spur” strings, that give a more realistic result for hill tops, valley floors, and ridges and spurs.

It’s all quite easy to use, particularly if your data are organised into appropriate objects.

For more information, open Studio 3 Help, select the Index tab and enter “make DTM” to find the comprehensive online help:
