New Faces at Datamine South Africa
Roy Irvine joins Datamine South Africa (DSA) from De Beers Group Services where he was involved in the deployment of Fusion system for Borehole Data Management for the De Beers Group Exploration activities worldwide. He brings with some 27 years experience of the use of computer systems for exploration and mining purposes.
He takes on a role of Business Client Manager and his key responsibilities are to ensure Datamine develops a range of improvement initiatives with key clients. He will also take overall responsibility for the implementation of projects and will ensure that client business requirements are documented according to Enterprise Architecture principles.

STUDIO 3 ROLL-OUT
Since the launching of Studio 3
in September 2006, Datamine South Africa has implemented the
software at six of our client sites. This is scheduled to pick
up in the new year (2007). Each site will be contacted with
regard to the different migration options available to them.
For any further information
regarding the roll-out please contact Odette Aspeling or Sello
Nzama on +27 11 803 6608 or email

USER FORUM 2007
Images of the Forum - click an image above to enlarge it
Datamine South Africa held its annual Datamine User Forum at Kievits Kroon, Pretoria, South Africa from the 15th to the 16th of March 2007. The Forum allows for Datamine to showcase some of its latest technologies and future developments. It also provides a platform for knowledge sharing amongst people from the mining industry as they also get to share their success stories and findings. A total of thirteen papers were presented at the forum and these came from both Datamine staff and clients. These are available below for downloading.

- Operational improvement using geotechnical block models – Megan Little (Anglo Platinum)
Over the last few years, geotechnical block models at Anglo Platinum’s PPRust open pit operation have been developed and used to improve the overall profitability of the mine. Borehole logging and face mapping data is used to interpolate rock mass ratings and other geotechnical parameters into block model cells for each open pit. Using customised scripts, an ideal slope angle as well as a blastability index is calculated per cell. These are then used for optimizing slope design and blast design on a regular basis. In order to maximize the large financial benefits that result, a partnership between Anglo Platinum and Datamine has been created and the “Geotech Modeller” software has been developed. This will be customisable for any mine, open pit or underground, and aims to combine geological, geotechnical, hydrological and economical data to provide a unique ‘resource to mill’ solution for a mining operation. - Implementation of a global exploration borehole management system – Roy Irvine/Jonathan Kleynhans (DSA) Read More…
- Fusion 2007 & future developments – Hennie Coetzee (DSA) Read More...
- Geo-risk scheduling using NPVScheduler – Richard Gawthorpe (Sound Mining Solutions)
The presentation examines the presence of risk in mining operations and how to take account of that risk in mine planning and scheduling. Using
conditional simulated block models, it looks at ways of measuring geological risk in a way that allows the mine planner to control the geo-risk over the life of the operation and allows mine management make well informed descisions concerning the development of mining operations. Read More…

- Sirovision Integration – Andy Lapworth (Datamine Software Limited) Read More…
- Seismic visualization & semi-automatic orebody correction project – Quartus Snyman (Anglo Platinum)
Anglo Platinum routinely carries out seismic surveys to generate structural geological models of ore deposits in order to improve geological understanding, the quality of mine planning as well as the efficiency and safety of subsequent operations.
In the past during a once-off exercise Anglo Platinum utilised the services and software packages of the RDR Group to construct geological models based on the seismic interpretation of this data. As new data such as boreholes, reef elevations and mapping becomes available the need for continuous updating of these models using established packages exist.
Currently the geological models created from the seismic data are viewed and manipulated in Datamine’s Studio Software as part of the mine planning process, but are difficult and time consuming to update. This updating should occur on a routine basis as new borehole or mine intersection data becomes available and carried out by mine staff. Tools to aid the accuracy, auditability, repeatability and speed of this process are the drive behind this project.
In order to address these requirements Anglo Platinum, Datamine and RDR collaborated to develop the Seismic Visualisation and Semi-automatic Ore Body Correction modules to be used within the Studio 3 application. Read More…
- Mineral resource governance framework – Jon Dadswell (DSA) Read More…
- Implementing assay QA/QC protocols and procedures in exploration and mining – Jonathan Kleynhans (DSA) Read More…
- Quality Assurance extends beyond assays – Mark Krug (De Beers)
De Beers Group Exploration uses DHLogger to capture early and late stage (evaluation) drill data and DHExplorer to provide 2D visualization. Current deployment is in RSA, Canada, Botswana, Angola, DRC and India. Datamine provides QC packages aimed primarily at the assay dataset, whereas De Beers Exploration has need for a tool that will assist with data QC outside the assay dataset and more at the level of drill hole, collar coordinate, downhole survey, time management, core density, hand-held geophysics, sample, core photographs etc. After considering the business rules a tool was developed using MSAccess that enables the geologist to QC his/her own data before submitting it to higher levels in the database. The tool, with multi-language capability, generates consistent, repeatable error reports out of the Fusion database that enable the user to identify problems at an early stage thus ensuring that data is fixed at source. This talk discusses some of the issues experienced by De Beers Group Exploration in implementing a drill data capture solution and presents an overview of the solution used to QC the data..
