Introducing Ricardo Grandi

Datamine Australia welcomes Ricardo Grandi as Technical Consultant.

Ricardo obtained his Mining Engineering Degree at the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) where he learnt to use Datamine Studio. During his studies, Ricardo was selected to do an internship with Datamine South Africa, where he became proficient in Datamine’s Mine 2-4D and EPS software.  Ricardo also provided consulting services on a number of projects, gaining invaluable practical experience.

As part of his internship, Ricardo also worked for AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine in Ghana where he was part of the mine design and scheduling team.  Ricardo also developed a number of scripting solutions during his tenure at Obuasi Mine before returning to South Africa to join Datamine South Africa again.  Ricardo then returned to Brazil to complete his studies, where after he was recruited by Datamine Australia.

Ricardo is looking forward to assisting Datamine Australia’s clients in developing their understanding and use of Mine2-4D.

Introducing Raul Espinoza

Datamine Australia welcomes Raul Espinoza as Technical Consultant.

Studio 3 Release 14 Coming Soon

To ensure the highest quality assurance standards are met before our products are released, a Datamine Consultant/Product Expert from one our worldwide offices will spend time with our developers to assist them in testing our products before each release. This gives our developers an insight as to how you use the software and what are the important issues that need addressing. The knowledge base developed from these visits will continue to be added to the automated testing process.

The next release of Studio 3 Release 14 has undergone thorough testing with the assistance of Fergus Thomas, Datamine Australia’s Technical Consultant. Some new features to keep an eye for are as follows:

NEW MOD2XYZ Command

MOD2XYZ will assign field values from a model to any file containing XYZ coordinate fields. This can be useful for:

·          assigning a rocktype value from a block model to a drillhole file

·          assigning an interpolated grade from a block model to a drillhole file so that it can be compared with the actual sample value.

NEW "To Excel" Loaded Data Option

The Loaded Data control bar has been enhanced to support a To Excel option. This is an excellent method for quickly transferring data sets with less than 65536 rows to Excel. Any object in memory can be transferred in this manner.

NEW VR Window emulates Visualizer Window

Many functions of the Visualizer window such as the default illumination settings and block model cell scaling factors have been migrated to the VR window with the view that the VR window will eventually replace the Visualizer. The VR window is more memory efficient and advanced in displaying three-dimensional data than the Visualizer and includes additional functionality:

·          VR Block Models can now be viewed as transparent surfaces, rendered as an unlit object, displayed as a hull (outline) and can be viewed with a bounding box to show the full data extents.

·          A new Sections toolbar has been added to allow objects displayed as sections to be traversed using familiar controls. Using a similar configuration to the Plots window, you can now align sections to points, set default alignments, modify the section width, apply clipping and traverse backwards and forwards through all sections using desktop icons.

·          The Environment Settings dialog now has a new Exaggerate option, allowing the VR window data to be stretched by a specific amount, in a fixed direction. The VR window will also support any existing exaggeration settings in the Design window when the VR window is updated ("vro").

·          Surfaces can now be rendered with unlit surfaces.

To load new or updated data from the Design Window into the VR window, use the shortcut “vro”. To load new or updated data from the VR window data into the Design Window, use the shortcut “vrv”.

Datamine Australia will distribute Studio 3 Release 14 to all clients that have upgraded and will be contacting Datamine Studio users to discuss migration options.

Conferences

Indonesian Students Mining Competition 6

The Seminar and Datamine Workshop that PT Stania Bara Utama, Datamine’s Jakarta based agent, conducted at the Indonesian Students Mining Competition (ISMC) in April 2008 was a huge success. The main topic discussed was the importance of underground mining methods to exploit reserves not obtainable through surface mining. Resource and reserve estimation methods based on the JORC code using Studio 3 were demonstrated to 134 students.

Due to the overwhelming response received, PT Stania Bara Utama has been asked to conduct a similar workshop for the general mining industry in Indonesia.

Mine Feasibility 2008

Datamine sponsored this year’s Mine Feasibility Conference on 22 and 23 April 2008. A workshop on how to implement mine planning and scheduling tools was delivered by Datamine in conjunction with GijimaAST and XempleX.

The workshop was well received and generated much interest with the main discussion topic being the ease of interfacing mine planning and scheduling products Mine 2-4D and NPV Scheduler with financial modeling systems such as XempleX.

Mining Automation WA

Robin Hollands, Datamine’s Group Research Engineer, presented a paper on “Using Datamine InTouchGPS as a Virtual Reality portal into mine information systems” at the Mining Automation WA conference on 27 May 2008.

The paper sparked a lot of curiosity among the delegates with many wanting to explore possibilities with InTouchGPS for monitoring non-GPS based systems such as underground vehicles and mine ventilation systems. Robin was also invited to join a panel of technical experts at the conference to share his expertise on various discussion topics.

Sampling 2008

Steve Hodgson, Technical Services Manager, attended the Sampling 2008 conference on 27 May 2008.

Most of papers delivered where of high quality and focused on current mining industry sampling process. The conference was well attended by Datamine users.
